The first part of this letter was written 2 days before the battle of Trafalgar (at the close, of which, he lost his life), the second on the eve of the battle. At Trafalgar, Nelson's forces defeated the combined fleets of France and Spain. "I have done my duty, thank God for that", were his last words.
